Summer Hair Care

Sunday, June 27, 2010

With the dry summer air and the sun beaming down on our tresses, it is very important to deep condition your hair at least once a week.

I love to mix my own, all natural deep conditioning mask using coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil and shea butter. Scientists at the Textile Research have proven that Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil and Olive oil penetrate the hair shaft to make it stronger (Cosmet. Sci 52, 169-184, 2001) . The study showed straight chain glycerides like coconut oil , avocado oil and olive oil easily penetrate into the hair. I also like to add shea butter to my mask to help smooth frizziness.

Avocado oil contains essential nutrients like proteins, vitamins A, D, E and B6, magnesium, copper, iron, amino acids and folic acid, all of which are extremely essential for hair growth and nourishment. It is also known to have natural sunscreen properties that can protect the hair and scalp from the damage caused by the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun.

Coconut oil can nourish each hair strand by penetrating deep into the hair shaft. It adds shine and softness to hair follicles and prevents hair breakage and dryness. It also adds strength and vitality to hair and is known to have anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.

Olive oil is rich in high levels of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. Both mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E are good for moisturizing, protecting and nourishing hair.

Shea butter can do wonders for hair that has been damaged by excessive coloring and blow-drying. Damaged and brittle hair can be conditioned and revitalized by its moisturizing properties as it soothes and softens dry hair.

I take equal parts of each ingredient, add a little cheapie conditioner, warm them in the microwave and mix them well in a bowl, then apply the mask to my hair from roots to ends and clip it up in a bun. I leave the mask on my hair overnight (or at least 4 hours) then shampoo twice followed by my normal conditioner. My hair is left soft, smooth and moisturized and ready for another week of styling! If you feel that your hair is weak and needs some protein, you can add one egg to the mixture.
