My Curly Hair Routine!

Friday, April 20, 2012

Hola Goddesses! I have been receiving many requests on how I style and take care of my curly hair.  This is my current routine:

Here is the list of products I use on my hair right now:

I really love this product combination for my curls. I would suggest using a brand that does not use Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfates in the shampoo (they can strip the hair of moisture). My favorite brands right now are Crème of Nature Argan Oil products and Organix products. These products keep my curls moisturized and I love the way the products smell to!

You will need these tools:

- wide tooth comb or denman brush

- hair clips (to section your hair off)

This is my routine:

1. In the shower, I first wash my hair making sure I really massage my scalp to get the circulation going and get rid of any flakes and left over product.

2. I rinse really well and then wring my hair out and apply the deep conditioner all over, massaging it in. I then take one of the hair clips and put my hair up in a bun to allow the conditioner to absorb while I take the rest of my shower. (Sometimes, I will detangle my hair in the shower with the conditioner in it using a wide toothed shower comb.)

3. I finish my shower and before I get out, I take my hair down rinse out the conditioner really well. I then wring out the excess water and just place a towel around my necks to catch the extra water.

4. I don't towel dry my hair cause that makes frizz.

5. Next I spray the detangler all over and take two quarter sizes ( in your palm) of the leave in conditioner and apply it all through my hair. If I haven’t already done this in the shower, I then detangle my hair with the denman brush or wide tooth comb, starting from the bottom up.

6. I then divide my hair into two sections, half up half down, and clip the top section up with a hair clip.

7. I apply my styling product ( mousse, gel or soft curl cream) to the bottom section, about a half palm full (depending on how long or thick your hair is) and kind of rake the product through my hair with my fingers. This detangles the hair and forms your curls as well. Do this to the top section as well.

8. If you wear a part in your hair, use your wide tooth comb to make the part now and then finish with the shine spray or a few more drops of the serum on the outer layers of your hair.

9. Now you let it air dry. Do not touch your hair until it is dry. If you do, it will frizz up. When it is dry, then you can start to fluff it up to get some more volume and shape if it is flat.

My curls will last about 3 or 4 days, then I rewash and do the process over. I refresh them with the detangler spray and moisturize them daily with the Coconut Oil Hair Milk and I sleep on a satin pillowcase to prevent breakage and moisture loss. I also do a weekly deep conditioning of my hair with a homemade shea butter/coconut oil/olive oil/avocado oil mask conditioner that I make.  Click here to read the info on the benefits and how to make this mask.

Here are a few pics of my results, wet then dry:

I hope this answers a lot of questions. I plan on filming a video so you can see it all in action!

Make Up Tips from Drag Queens!

Saturday, April 14, 2012

Hola Goddesses,

A few weekends ago, My friend Mia and I went to see my favorite drag queen Kenya Michaels.

Me, Kenya Michaels & Mia

(Follow Kenya on Facebook and Twitter: @Kenya_Michaels).

Kenya has recently appeared on the fourth season of RuPaul's Drag Race on LogoTv and she is by far my favorite out of all the Puerto Rican queens that have appeared on the show. Her make up and overall look was always flawless. Kenya performed in my city and I had to go see her and ask her about her make up secrets. I was able to watch her perform, which was amazing, and also got to do a meet and greet after the show. She is so beautiful, talented and down to earth! Kenya stated that she would soon be doing YouTube videos about her make up and I was super excited. One tip she gave me was to make sure that after I apply my concealer, that I do not blink my eyes or look down before I apply my powder to set the concealer.

I also met a queen named  Saellah V who gave me a huge make up tip that I have been testing for the past few weeks.
Saellah V

I asked her how queens keep their base foundation looking fresh after performances and all day wear.  She said, "Milk of Magnesia, girl".  What? I had to find out more about this. I did a search on YouTube and Google and came up with tons of information on how women use milk of magnesium to help oily skin.

I tried Saellah's make up tip these past few weeks and it works!!!  First, I wash my face and apply my moisturizer as usually.  I let the moisturizer sink into my skin for a few minutes and then I use a foundation brush to apply the milk of magnesia.  I let it sink in for a few minutes and then follow my normal make up routine.  The oil production of my skin is down to at least half of what it was; I only have to blot my skin once or twice a day as oppose to every hour.

We also met a queen named Gia who is a make up artist at MAC and who painted herself PERFECTLY!

I had a blast and can't wait to go to my next drag show and get more tips from these fabulous queens!

Love, Peace & Lip Gloss!
